32 Mater Lakes Academy Seniors Will Graduate with Their Associates in Arts from Miami Dade College

On April 29th, 32 seniors will be receiving their AA's from MDC North Campus as part of their graduation from college.

On Saturday, April 29th as most seniors at Mater Lakes Academy will be joining seniors from across the state at Grad Bash in Universal Orlando, thirty-two students at Mater Lakes Academy will have another reason to celebrate besides the end of their senior year and their upcoming graduation from Mater Lakes. They celebrate graduation from Miami Dade College North Campus at the James L. Knight Center.

This year Mater Lakes Academy will hold their eighth Commencement Ceremony for the Class of 2017 Tuesday, June 6th at 2:00 pm at the Miami Dade County Auditorium, but for these thirty-two students this will be their second graduation of the year.  Besides these students wrapping up their final course of studies and preparing for college, they will be graduating not only with honors but with their Associates in Arts from Miami Dade College North Campus.  Throughout my time at Mater Lakes, I have learned that I have made many unexpected allies. I have never cultivated strong relationships with these teachers or students, yet they are still proud of my success. This support is proving to be crucial in this time of decision making,” stated Gillian Peraza, senior and National Merit scholarship finalist.

Mater Lakes Academy has 249 members of the graduating class, the largest in MLA history thus far.  Seventy-eight of those students will be graduating Cum Laude.  Thirty-two of those Cum Laude graduates will be graduating with honors from Miami Dade College North Campus with their AA’s, again the largest in MLA history. “These 32 Mater Lakes Academy “stars” will be among the 1200+ graduating students who will walk across the stage at the North Campus Commencement. What a phenomenal sense of pride and accomplishment for these students, their high school and college faculty and their families given that as members of the Mater Lakes Academy Class of 2017, they are graduating with a high school diploma as well as a well-earned degree from Miami Dade College North Campus!,” exclaimed Dr. Malou Harrison, North Campus President for Miami Dade College.

Many of the Class of 2017 graduates have been students at Mater Lakes Academy since the sixth grade and Mater Lakes has taken great pride in watching them progress and preparing them for the future. “I learned that it's important to appreciate what I have, and to not dwell on what I don't. For example, I am appreciative of our principal. He outshines the average principal, especially for helping us feel like he is more than just a principal to us. Once you begin to appreciate and feel content with what you have, it's easier for you to focus and work towards a goal,” said Laura Ospina, senior. “It is an honor to have these types of students at our school.  It has been a pleasure to have helped in the development and growth of their post-secondary education.  I look forward to seeing their accomplishments in the future and their impact on our community,” said Mr. Rene F. Rovirosa, Principal at Mater Lakes Academy.
