Mater Lakes Academy’s Wrestling Ranks 2nd Place in 1A 4 Regionals

The Mater Lakes wrestling team shattered all program records with an amazing Regional tournament finishing a close second place as a team and sending nine wrestlers to the state tournament.

The Mater Lakes wrestling team shattered all program records with an amazing Regional tournament finishing a close second place as a team and sending nine wrestlers to the state tournament.

The Bears had a region best five individual champions going 5-0 in the regional finals with four other wrestlers placing fourth qualifying them for the state tournament in Kissimmee. Danny Martinez (8th) , Nick Luna (12th) , Omar Armengol (12th) , Nestor Nunez (12th) , and David Alvarez (12th) all captured a regional title for the Bears shattering the program record of two individual regional champions accomplished two years ago. Justin Zerbinati (10th) , Gonzalo Perez (10th) , Rafael Alvarez (12th) , and Danny Rodriguez (12th) booked their trip to the state tournament with their fourth place finish in the region.

The Bears finished second place in the Region ahead of Somerset Academy at the tournament avenging a loss in the District tournament. Head coach Brandon Neifeld proclaims this was the biggest and most exciting weekend of his coaching career. “We have come a long way from our first year as a wrestling program” states Neifeld. “This weekend our athletes proved that their hard work and determination did not go unnoticed. We are looking forward to making a statement at the state tournament and letting everyone know we are here to stay as a wrestling powerhouse for years to come” says Neifeld. The Bears travel to the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee this weekend to compete in the FHSAA State Wrestling Finals looking to leave their mark on a remarkable season.

Mater Lakes Academy is a Miami-Dade County Public Charter School, with students enrolled in 6th – 12th grade. Mater Lakes Academy has been open since the 2006-2007 academic school year, and is currently in its 13th year under the direction of Principal Rene F.
